In Oakland, we serve youth ages 18-21 who have been out of school and out of work for the last 6 months (Opportunity Youth) or have been involved in the foster care system.

Today, 11.9% of young people (between the ages of 16 and 24) in Alameda county are disconnected from school and employment. These youth are severed from critical pathways to success and, if we don’t help them re-engage with education and work before age 25, they will face significant economic challenges for the rest of their lives.

Juma bridges the economic opportunity gap by providing employment for youth in a social enterprise and helping them gain experience that can lead to greater future possibilities.

In 2006, Juma expanded its social enterprise operations to Oakland, California. Through a partnership with hospitality company, Spectra, Juma offers year-round employment at the Oakland Coliseum to youth aged 18-21 who have been out of school and out of work for the last 6 months.

While at Juma, youth gain training and experience, earn an income, build financial capability, set career goals and ultimately, improve their economic well-being.

Our Local Impact

In 2017, Juma Oakland is employing 60 youth. Through Juma’s YouthConnect program, our goal is to provide low-income, high-potential youth with a pathway into future career and educational opportunities to foster economic well-being.
